For decades, Cheryl Merriman has served on boards at both the youth and adult levels, always working to provide support for players. She has also contributed on the field as a coach for youth and women’s programs. Behind the scenes, she has been the organiser and driving force supporting countless men’s teams in the VISL and PCSL over many years.
Her work includes player registration, field bookings, permits and the many practical details that keep programs running. Cheryl travels extensively around Vancouver Island to ensure that everything is in place and ready to go. Much of this work happens out of sight, but it is essential to the opportunities available to players and teams.
At the heart of Cheryl’s contribution is a tireless commitment to making sure every player has the chance to participate. She works to ensure that nobody is left out and greets people with a smile and a hug, helping them feel welcome and that they belong. Her care for the people involved is as much a part of her contribution as the time and effort she gives to the game.
Cheryl does not seek accolades or recognition. Her lasting contribution to Mid Isle and the wider Vancouver Island soccer community is reflected in the programs she supports and the people she welcomes. The Island Soccer Spotlight offers an opportunity to recognise the dedication of someone on whom so much depends.
